For the past several years, against everyones better judgement, we have been maintaining an end of life version of a postgres based service architecture. Based on Postgres 9.0, there was often chatter about possibly upgrading, but it was always deemed “too risky”. Of course you can only get so far patching and upgrading and tuning and tweaking, and so this year we finally got the go ahead to upgrade. Come hear how we took on this task, dealing with almost a decade of server changes and application binaries we could not change (no source!), our journey includes everything from recompiling postgres extensions to building custom versions of pgbouncer for query rewriting. Yes, its the stuff dreams (or nightmares) are made of!
