Managing high volumes of connections in PostgreSQL is critical for optimal performance and scalability. Traditionally, PgBouncer has been the go-to external connection pooler, offering lightweight and efficient connection management. In this talk, we introduce a version of PgBouncer that extends its functionality, allowing it to run either standalone or directly within PostgreSQL as an in-database connection pooling extension. This dual-mode approach simplifies deployments, reduces latency, and opens up new possibilities for managing connections more efficiently. Attendees will explore the architecture, benefits, and use cases of this flexible solution, offering the best of both worlds—external and in-database pooling—to meet diverse performance and scalability needs. Alternative connection poolers will be discussed also.
