Arun Kumar Samayam is a distinguished technology architect, author, and speaker with over 15 years of experience in cloud solutions, database architecture, and data platform engineering. As a Principal Architect in a leading global airline’s Cloud and Engineering Platform team, he has driven major cloud transformation efforts and designed resilient, multi-cloud data platforms. Renowned for his expertise in PostgreSQL, Oracle, MySQL, and cloud‑native technologies, Arun is a trusted advisor on multi-cloud strategy and database modernization. He has presented at premier industry events—including Oracle OpenWorld, MySQL HeatWave Summit, and global user groups—guiding organizations through distributed data challenges. Arun is the co-author of Mastering PostgreSQL Administration, Mastering MySQL Administration, and Azure FinOps Essentials, and served as technical reviewer for the OCI GoldenGate publication. Motivated by simplifying complex cloud documentation, he aims to provide a comprehensive, practical guide for deploying PostgreSQL across OCI, Azure, AWS, and GCP, empowering teams to build robust, scalable multi-cloud solutions.

Citus extends PostgreSQL to handle large-scale, distributed workloads by enabling horizontal scaling through sharding and parallel query execution. While the concept is powerful, many teams struggle to understand how Citus behaves in real production environments and how to design it correctly for performance, availability, and growth.
In this session, we’ll explore the core architecture of Citus, including coordinators, workers, shard placement, and distributed query planning. Through a high-level demo and real-world scenarios, we’ll examine how data is distributed, how queries are executed across nodes, and how Citus handles rebalancing, node failures, and scaling operations.
The talk will also cover common deployment patterns, operational best practices, and lessons learned from running Citus in production—such as shard sizing, rebalancing strategies, and workload suitability. Attendees will leave with a clear understanding of when Citus is the right choice for PostgreSQL and how to avoid common design and operational pitfalls.
