You have a 20TB Postgres production database.. requests have come in for new compliance and business-continuity requirements. The new mobile app development team has requested access to a staging copy of the current data. Backup windows are getting longer and longer.

You start doing the math in your head.. 1, 2, 3, 4.. no 6 copies.. that will require an extra 120TB of space... how can you request more storage mid-year in the budget cycle? How long will you need to deliver these databases... and how will you do this again?

Being an enterprise DBA is quite a challenge.. moving all this data to the public cloud is not an option. Not this year, not next year.

Copy Data Management (CDM) is an enterprise approach to managing “database sprawl” and data protection via backup and retention policies. Once only available to enterprise databases like Oracle and Microsoft SQL-Server, CDM is now available to leading open-source databases like PostgreSQL.

In this technical session, we will review how we designed and implemented CDM for Postgres using the Nutanix Distributed File System, without forking the Postgres storage subsystem.

Bringing decades of engineering experiences from the traditional enterprise database worlds of Oracle and SQL-Server, we will share our experiences working with Postgres, technical lessons learnt and future improvements we expect from the Postgres community and learnings from our initial client experiences.

Nutanix Era is a suite of software which automates and simplifies database management, bringing one-click simplicity and invisible operations to database provisioning and lifecycle management (LCM). In addition to one-click database provisioning, Era leverages Nutanix's space and time-efficient snapshot technology, integrating it with application-specific APIs to achieve snapshots and point-in-time recovery.
